To echo what Ned said:

The oil light really only serves as an indication that you just bought a new engine.Coming from a Saturn, that are notorious for burning oil, I would check my oil every couple days. Most times I would pull it into the garage and pop the hood to serve as a reminder to check the oil before I left the next time.

There are other things you can do to prevent oil starvation. Look into a Canton Accusump set up. It's a pressurized cylinder that will discharge oil in the event of low oil pressure. You can also use it to pre-oil the engine before start up. And the best part is that it's one of those mods that isn't car specific and can be transferred to your next car- so you can think of it more as a long term investment. I'm not sure what class it might bump you into, that's something I'll let you worry about.

Good luck with the rebuild.--Tom

Unfortunatly, I'm all too familar with the devastating sound of main bearings going bad. You're luck you have a SBC and can get every part you could possibly need or want from a local auto parts store. They don't carry too many Corvair engine parts, maybe a radiator cap :^).As for the oil pressure light. When autocrossing or enjoying other spirited driving, it stops being a "warning" light and becomes a "why did it break" light. Most of the OP senders for the light come on at 4-7 psi, way too low for high RPM driving. By the time the light comes on, it's most likely already too late.Ned
