And to add to what Guy just said...
Ok, first I will vent a little then end things on a more positive note. I don't like to have to moan and groan like this, but it is necessary.
As event chair it was very frustrating trying to find enough workers for the second heat when it was also time for me to get my car ready so I can have fun too. When you finish driving heat one you go to the bathroom, grab a quick bite to eat, something to drink, then report for your worker assignment ASAP.
There is a problem when the people who just finished working so you can drive heat one has already relieved themselves, grabbed some food and drink and have their cars in grid before all the workers are on course.
Also, if you think you have a valid reason to come out and drive your car and then leave without working, it better be an emergency situation. Don't come out to drive when you know you can't stay and work because of a ballgame or birthday or whatever. If you do have a valid reason to leave you need to talk to the event chair and make sure the chair understands and agrees. Having the event chair on your side will keep you from getting disqualified and keep your reputation in good standing.
Last complaint:
For whatever reason a lot of people were late to this event. I can understand one or two people being late, but this event was way beyond the ordinary. We had the event ready to go, 45 minutes or so before we actually started. I had to keep checking to see if all the heat one drivers and workers had arrived so I could finally get the show on the road. If a driver from Lawrence Kansas can be ready on time, I think all of us locals can too.
If everyone is on time I'm going to give you more runs, which equals more fun. So please be prompt to the events and allow plenty of time to travel, prep and tech your car and be ready and waiting for a drivers meeting. If you want to come out at sunrise and learn how to setup the course, trailer, etc... you are more than welcome.
>>> Ok, enough of that BS and on to a more positive message.
This organization is run strictly through volunteers that work hard to put on fun events for us and you to enjoy. As a driver you MUST also be a worker. Working an event is fun and educational too since you get to make new friends and see how the rest of the competition handles the course in the area you are working.
I highly recommend trying to work with new people each time instead of your usual buddies so you get to know everyone, young, not so young, whatever race or nationality, it's fun. It is also good to volunteer to work different positions so that you eventually know how everything works at a Solo event. The more experienced people there are the easier it is to keep things going when key people are gone.
I know many of you are new and perhaps intimidated by how things work, but it really is pretty easy. Don't be afraid to ask questions and jump in and offer help with setup or course design, etc. None of us regulars grew up doing this, we just blindly jumped in with both feet... well I guess there are a few members that actually were born into the SCCA thanks to their parents.
Sincerely,
Kevin Anderson
