[Wichita-SCCA] Competition w/ other regions

Thomas,

Club drifting events are conducted this year on an experimental basis
with Mid-South and Middle Georgia Regions. Principles in these two areas
have created a ClubDrift rule set that has been blessed by risk
management. There are no more plans for this year to sanction any other
events until the evaluation is done for the six or so events in those
two regions.

That being said, I did attend the first one in the Mid South region and
was impressed, excited, and found the sport to be quite interesting. The
drivers were very serious and very dedicated to the safety of the event
and to their craft. As pure sport of driving skill and car control, it
is very much like Performance Rally on pavement. And yes, this old fart
did get two rides in Miata on steroids. Great fun and these cats can
drive!

The challenge club drift will have is assuring the solo community that
this is not an encroachment into their sites (we as a club, if we decide
to go forward, need to make the distinctions very clear) and that these
are not NOPI type events with bikini contests, burnout contests, and
stereo contests. We need to stress the driving skill required to be a
good drifter. I think the best sites for drifting will be race tracks of
any kind. The actual footprint for a good drift course can be way
smaller than that needed for Solo, and the overall top speeds are
actually slower. The events in Middle Georgia are being held in the
paved infield of a 3/8's mile oval. The events in Mid South are being
held on about a 1/3 mile back section of Memphis Motorsports Park.

RallyCross is very exciting and a great entry level sport. I would love
to see more Midwest regions hold these events, as I know would Pego
Mack. I encourage you to pursue this and generate as much interest as
possible. I also encourage you to make plans to attend events in
Nebraska Region during this year, including the National Championships
in October.

Thanks for your interest and I am excited to see the new competition
programs come on board.

Subject: Re: [Wichita-SCCA] Competition w/ other regions

It has come to my attention that this region is lacking 2 major events
that would increase its memberships, attendence, popularity (not just of
this region but of SCCA in general), etc.

I've been browsing around on youtube and myspace and have found that
other regions are holding Rally Cross events and Drifting events...

I know of many people in this region, member or not, that would love to
see these events start happening here and I've brought it up in the last
meeting that we had. I was encouraged to be the spearhead for these
events and would like to start making things happen... I've already sent
a message to SCCA national asking for all of the information that I
could get, and now I'm asking everybody in our region!

I want to know your opinions, comments, questions, etc.
I would also like to know of anybody who would like to help me in
spearheading these events.
As we all know, my first concern for these events will be safety, so if
there is no current rule book on drifting events, I would like help in
making one that would allow that type of fun for competitors while
making sure safety is maintained...

As for rally cross, I've been told that we have plenty of farmland that
we could use... if that's the case, then I need people to help me get
those events organized as well...

I would like to hear from everybody and get help from everybody who
would be interested in these events. I don't want these events to just
compete w/ other regions, I want them because I know many others want
them too. I know that these events are fun. And, I know it's 2 more
areas of interest that will keep some people off the streets. THE
BIGGEST THING THOUGH, IS THAT THESE EVENTS WILL INCREASE THE LEVELS OF
COMPETITION IN OUR REGION!!! Which makes it even more inviting to
compete in the SCCA and in Wichita Region!

Thanks
Thomas (#8)
