Yes, my dad trained there in ought-39, just before he was sent to Pearl
Harbor as a PBY (flying boat) Radioman (yes, he was at Pearl 12/7/41).
When I attended a few races at Hutch I mentioned it, and he remembered
quite a lot - local families bringing pies to the service men, POW camps of
German airmen, top gas, and arresting hooks in the runways for carrier
landing practice. Bill used to have a late 60's or early '70s Maserati in
one of the terminal firetruck bays, but it looks like the terminal is gone,
from the aerial photos.
Also in the aerial photos are tons of sailplane trailers, and some on the
esses that are all that remains of a taxi or runway. Bill sold off a lot of
the concrete, and the esses might not pass safety for width alone.
