Hi Sydney!
The lack of reply to you was only because I hadn't been paying much
attention to email recently and your earlier request slipped past me. We
don't have a publicity officer position in our region although I try to
cover that need in the southern part of the state from time to time. The
problem is that we have the expectation that everyone will be enthusiastic
enough to sell the sport through word-of-mouth. As you know, if everyone is
in charge then no one is in charge and that can lead to slip-ups such as
missing your kind offer of free publicity in the Winfield Courier and
Arkansas City Traveler via the weekly Entertainment Guide. Please allow me
to correct the situation by providing background information to you.
My information is that our first points event of the year will be held on
March 25th at the south apron at Strother Field. This location is between
B-Four Flying and General Electric and is accessed by entering the Strother
Field Industrial Park from US Highway 77 at the entrance just north of the
railroad tracks and then driving straight back towards the runway area.
Typically our people will be on site laying out the course at dawn with 1st
car off at about 10:00 am. The final car will usually cross the finish line
at roughly 2:00 or 3:00 PM followed by a rapid course teardown. Then we
welcome all present to continue on to food, refreshment, and socialization
at a local establishment, usually in Winfield but we could be persuaded to
go to Arkansas City if there were a suitable venue with adult beverages
available on Sunday afternoon... (hint, hint) Further information about
club schedules and activities is available online at www.wichitascca.org
This and all Wichita solo events are non-spectator events in the sense that
we cannot ourselves advertise for spectators. There is no such limitation
on any press coverage however as we have no control over that. Regardless
of the issue of "non-spectator" we welcome all visitors free of charge.
Visitors are required only to sign our liability waiver, to wear a free
wrist band that indicates that they have signed-in, and to obey our safety
rules such as staying behind the flagged-off "hot" areas for their own
safety. Minors are allowed as visitors only if at least one parent or
guardian signs a special waiver. For the older minors it may be possible
for them (and all adults) to ride as passenger in a competing car if invited
by the driver but they must have both parents give permission first with a
special waiver. With that understood we encourage all to come either to
visit or to participate in a sport that is half social event and half
adrenalin-producing, mind-blowing, completely addictive, life-altering
high-performance fun that is akin to riding a horizontal roller coaster only
this time YOU get to steer!
It is difficult to portray in words what one experiences on course. This
may be a case where photos speak louder than words. I will ask my friend
Robert Foster if it would be possible to provide you with a suitable
selection of action-oriented photos and permission to publish them.
Best regards,
Greg Laws
