Don't confuse "publicity" with "coverage."

The heartburn at SCCA is how we advertise events to entice people to come.

If some publication decides to come write a story about the event, that is
THEM covering it, not YOU publicizing it. Just be careful in interviews to
be quoted as inviting participants. "Oh, sure, anybody can come drive one of
our events. It's easy, in almost anything in their driveway. We'll help them
out, walk them through, show them the ropes." But never, "come out and
watch."

BTW, and IMHO, the article would be better keyed to a Wichita event, not a
Strother event. To entice the never dunnit, you make it easy -- distance
will be off-putting to someone who's starting out. Would you rather have
five newbies from Wichita or one newbie from Winfield? Get 'em hooked, then
introduce traveling.

Oh, and it is not just "the inherent of danger when talking about large
pieces of metal being driven near the limit." But rather that participants
do legal things like sign waivers in order to be on-site and they are more
easily controlled. Spectators do not, and they are more difficult to control
(they wander places they shouldn't, and we're typically not set up to handle
that). Thus the chance of *someone* being injured (even slightly) is not
only greater, there is also a greater chance it is someone not covered by
our comprehensive insurance plan since this group of people also doesn't
know what to watch out for.
