[Wichita-SCCA] Transmissions

have a long story but to keep things short and interesting, I've been mostly
happy with Chance (63rd s. and Seneca), as opposed to totally frustrated
with others I have been to in town.
They have common automatic trannys, rebuilt on the shelf, and air-pressure
tested - they can drop yours and put in a rebuilt, guaranteed, and if
anything happens during the warranty period, they can put in another one in
short order. I may not take a my Northstar's funky-programmed tranny there,
but 'meri-mexi-can-adian cars and trucks and common "import" (even if made
in the US ) makes, they seem to handle pretty well.
I have had 4 rebuilds in my '92 Che-van, and theirs seems to be holding up
better than the last two. The first rebuild, another trans shop left an
itsy-bitsy spring out, and the 1-2 shift was so hard the dash vibrated.
Eventually some internals twisted off because of it - after their warranty
period.
As far as dropping a tranny, if you can fix it yourself, it's quite an
adventure, I do all my manual trans and clutch replacement, and call it
fun. If you want to swap yours for a rebuilt, Chance charged either 100 or
150 for remove/replace labor (OLD person memory issue). How much is
renting a tranny jack? Degreasing your driveway afterwards? It may be
worth it to let them do it.
Best of luck

If all you are wanting to do is drop the transmission I'm thinking that
if you remove all of the bolts that are connecting it, gravity will take
care of the rest ;) The hard part is fixing it and getting it hoisted up
high enough to put the bolts back in. ;) When my 98 truck's transmission
went south I took it to Chance transmission. I did have an issue with a
very slow leak (took a couple of months after a wipe down before a
couple of drops would appear on the driveway) that was never resolved,
but I basically lost interest in getting it fixed. Otherwise, everything
else was fine.

Has anyone ever wanted to drop a tranny in a 1993 Ford F150? What? No
takers? I want to, but I have absolutely no idea what to do, so I guess
I have to resort to professionals. So, if you know any good
transmission shops for late model Ford pickups, could you let me know.
I would prefer East side, but of course would drive further for a good
shop.
Thanks!
