[Wichita-SCCA] Last Weekend HPT

I also had a great weekend.  I spent Saturday at the AVRG race on Corner
8.  It was cold, and windy, and wet, and cold.  Still I had fun.  Saw
some good racing and some amazing cars.  The sounds from the AS Mustang
and the Wilcox Toyota Atlantic were worth the trip alone.  I wish I
could have stayed to work on Sunday but I had committed to running at
the HPT autox event because I knew the KS region needed all the entries
they can get to try and break even with the stupid expensive lot fee
they're being charged.

The solo was a lot of fun.  They used segments from both of the
Nationals courses to make a good course.  My MS6 didn't like the short
interval between runs.  The intercooler kept getting more and more
heatsoaked to the point where it just wasn't working and the timing was
cut to the point where it wasn't making any power at all.  Each run was
about .2 seconds slower even though I know I was driving a better line
every time.

Just the opposite happened when I ran Dave Green's Z06.  I picked up
about .5 seconds every run as I got more and more comfortable with the
car.  It is amazing how much torque and grip those Z06's have.  The
concept of momentum driving goes completely out the window.  You want to
be faster there, just press touch the gas and boom - you're up to speed.
And it brakes just as well.  Wonderful car.

I really wish we had a site that nice, but I'm glad we don't have to
deal with the lot fee.  Most of the price increase from last year is due
to having an ambulance there for the whole day.  That is just
ridiculous.  I'm still upset because I'm paying for a stupid ambulance
and it's personnel to sit around all day waiting for the nothing that
will happen.  What a waste of their time and my money.  I understand the
requirement was made by the site owner and there was no talking him out
of it - but I don't have to like it and I do have the right to complain
about it.

I had a wonderful time for my first trip up to HPT. I was really worried
about the weather, since we still had remnants of snow on the ground,
but it turned out to be a really nice day. The Kansas Region did a
really nice job, and kudo's to Ms. Avard for what I understand to be her
first (?) chairing at a solo. I only hope my first time goes as well.  A
couple of things I thought were nice was having a person at the end of
the run hand me a sticky note with my run time. And also the FM
broadcast is wonderful for us hard of hearing drivers. I now anxiously
await the results to be posted.
