[Wichita-SCCA] Heartland Park

IIRC, That tent with the big steel stakes was Mazda's tent.

You want to sign a contract covering the cost of repair? SUUUURE you can pound stakes into the asphalt!

And also notice, that tent was in the old paddock area, the south end of the old paddock which had yet to be resurfaced (see the cracks in the pavement?) -- and NOT surfaced with the racetrack-quality asphalt used on the solo pad.

And BTW, everyone going into HPT last weekend -- worker and driver alike -- was handed a page and a half of "Rules of Heartland Park Road Racing" which included "Please do not drive stakes or poles into any asphalt surface ... There are fines for any destruction of property."

The rules apply to everyone. Maybe you did see someone put a stake into pavement. What you didn't see was HPT telling him how much that would cost him.

Remember the tents for the Town Meeting in the (newly resurfaced) Liebler Pavilion area? Remember how they were tied down? HPT brought concrete barriers up there and the tents were tied to those.

Also remember, last year was the first year of Runoffs/Nationals for HPT. It was a learning experience for everyone. Just because you saw someone doing something then doesn't mean they'll allow it again -- it may mean that was how they discovered someone would try to do that.

Incidentally, the HPT Rules do NOT include any prohibition against refueling. It's a race track. Of course people will be refueling. In fact, they sell fuel. What they don't want is for you to leave your spill unattended. Clean up your own mess -- same rule your mommy had.

Other rules -- sign the waiver first? Standard procedure just about anywhere. The track would like it done before you get inside the track -- same rule as for all racers and workers. None of them go in the track first and get around to the legal necessities when they feel like it.

6 pm rule? From the HPT rule sheet: "Car Clubs must vacate the property by 6:00 PM each day unless other arrangements have been made." Let me repeat that last part -- UNLESS OTHER ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE. You want to stay later? The club has to arrange it. IOW, the club has to pay for the gate guard to stick around -- the track is not going to pay his overtime salary but give you that added benefit for free. (But if, for example, KVRG is racing that weekend which means the guard is there 24 hours anyway -- get with KVRG to be included in that on the premise you're all the same overall SCCA activity. But you have to MAKE THE ARRANGEMENT, not just expect it.)

Please remember, this is not just some parking lot, some no-longer-used airport apron, some chunk of empty pavement we happen upon. This is a built-for-the-purpose motorsports facility. All they're really asking is that we respect that fact and take care of the playground. In fact, as SCCA autocrossers, we have something of a reputation for taking care of the playground. It's called being welcome guests. Any reason that should change because the playground was built with our games specifically in mind?

Exactly like that. I think the comments there on SCCAforums says most of it...the rules only apply to us.

Well....there are a bunch of rules. But the important ones involve the protection of the surface.
No jacks or jack stands on surface(must put plywood down)
No trailer or tongue jacks on surface(must put plywood down)
No re-fueling on surface or anything else that could get on surface...ie...brake fluid, tranny fluid, grease, oil...etc.
No staking tents or awnings into surface.
No camping, or any other after hours visiting inside gates.(Must be offsite by 6pm)
Must check in at registration booth to sign waivers.
Must bow to road racers, and always yield to their right of way.(just kidding...kinda)

We are responsible for any damage to the surface.

Greg Reno or David Avard, there were some rules about HPT I know where related last year on the mailing list for participating at HPT. Could you point me to a link? Or perhaps send out those again?

        Thanks!!!

        Lawrence
