Okay, if that's the way to go, where's a good place to get one in town? Places where you've had good experiences? I ordered my Dell direct back in '98 through Boeing. I reeeeeally don't want to spend a whole heck of a lot of $$$; I have a racecar to build.... :)

I would get a new one. It's cheaper in the long run, and you can get a good computer now for real cheap. If you have an old CRT monitor, then the new systems come with LCD screens, too, which are now dropping below $150 for a 17-inch screen. Really good prices.

Also, there is a new version of Windows coming out next month (supposedly) called Vista. New machines right now should have a coupon for a free upgrade to Vista until it's actually released.

Look at refurbished machines (from Dell, at least. I trust Dell more than any other maker). They may say refurbished, but the parts are 100% new, not received back, and "modified". Their policy is not to re-use parts, but to build machines from parts that never got used. Good stuff at really good prices.

The costs you would pay to upgrade a machine (Memory, hard drive, Windows XP, etc..) wouldn't be as much as a new machine, but you really need a faster processor to take advantage of all of the upgrades you would be doing, and the processor is expensive and more difficult to replace.

So, in summary, get a new machine, make sure it has a coupon for Vista, and enjoy!

Time to finally bite the bullet. My POC Dell is still running Windows 98 and I need to upgrade to 2K or XP. I figure it might be time to also upgrade the hard drive. I'm tired of it being slow and all the error messages I get, plus I'm gonna finally ditch dial-up. Anybody have a recommendation where/who to take this to for the tune up? Or maybe just get a new one? TIA,

    Paul
