Below is a .pdf layout of the site for Nationals. Along with an explanation from Roger Johnson, Event Chair.

A lot of work has been accomplished by many people in getting ready for the first ever SCCA Tire Rack Solo Nationals at Heartland Park, Topeka (HPT). At this very moment, things are still being negotiated, coordinated and put into place, so that we can make this the best experience possible for all of you.

It is my supposition that part of making this a great experience for you is to keep you informed as things develop. I just got back to Houston after being in Topeka Thursday through Sunday working on course set up and site layout. Kevin Youngers' and Karen Babb's courses looked great and both tested ~58 seconds in a STS2 Miata on Victoracers. We dealt with several paddock and grid items that have been holding up release of the layout up to this point, and I believe that we now have this in a near final configuration. A 300kb PDF of the paddock/grid/course area layout is now available for your viewing, and will be kept current as revisions are implemented.

Now for some specific details.

The Paddock:

The main entrance to the paddock is in the northeast corner (upper right). The registration building, which is not shown, is just to the east (right) of the main entrance to the paddock. This is a "standalone" building with a large parking area by it, so that you can stop with your "big rig" and register on your way into paddock.

Paddock spaces will be managed by HPT. When you check in to registration at the site you will also be assigned a paddock space and taken directly to that space by a HPT representative. There should be more paddock area available for reservation than was available in the past at Forbes.

On the paddock map, the paved areas are indicated via white; the grassy areas via light green; and buildings or structures via light blue. Spaces large enough to accommodate motor homes and long trailers (~47' long) are generally on grass, while the smaller spaces (~30' long) are intended for competitor's cars and equipment and are generally on paved areas. There are also a few smaller spaces near the main entrance on grassy areas intended for camping and RV electrical hookups available for rent are found all along the east side. All of the lower paddock area is paved and will likely consist of smaller spaces.

As in the past, there is a designated storage area outside of paddock for "unloaded trailers", referred to as the VIP Parking area, which should make paddock area generally less congested.

Also as in the past, the paddock area will be monitored and issues that arise will be dealt with by the Paddock Marshall. If you have an issue after you have been assigned your space by HPT, please contact the SCCA Paddock Marshall (Phil Osborne) or any of his assistants.

Concessions, vendors and flushing toilets are found in the pavilion area (northwest corner) and in the Impound/Tech/Protest/Information (ITPI) building (south center). Showers are also located in the located in the ITPI building.

The Grids:

To maximize the length of the courses, all four grids were placed in the paddock area. In order to use less of the premium paved paddock spaces up with grid, Doug Gill came up with an ingenious solution to utilize the wide roads between the grassy areas where ever feasible. This solution has given the E1 and E2 grids each a unique shape and flow.

Please note the flow of all four grids. The black dotted lines show the pathway to the course via the entrance road; the gray dashed lines show the pathway back to your grid spot. It is important that we do not take shortcuts when returning to grid to avoid collisions with vehicles not expecting to see you.

Impound/Tech/Protest/Information (ITPI) Building:

The ITPI Building is a brand new structure which will allow us to perform impound, tech, and protest procedures out of the weather for the most part. Information is also located in this building next to the entrance of impound and tech. Tech will be accessible in the ITPI building at all times scheduled - even during the running of Tuesday and Wednesday's competition runs. Access to tech is from the west, and shown via the red cars and pathways.

This large building also includes a built-in indoor flat-bed scale for impound use. No more moving the scale pads to match your wheelbase! You will note that the gray pathway coming from the course area goes directly into the impound section. If you are in a "weighed class" and it is your time to "weigh", you will be guided directly from the course to the scales. Once weighed, you will then proceed directly to your usual grid spot where you will be impounded. Jim Hedderick, Chief of Impound, has a letter that addresses these and other impound requirements for 2006 in more detail. This letter can be found under the Event Information tab of the SCCA Tire Rack Solo National Championship page.

I hope that you are as excited as I am about holding the SCCA Tire Rack Solo Nationals at HPT and that you have as much fun at the Solo Nationals as I always do. Thanks to all the volunteers thus far who have stepped forward and put in countless hours before the event has even started.
